In consequence of the increasing focus on environmental issues, airports have chosen to let an external pre-conditioned air unit and a 400 Hz solid-state unit take over the functions of the aircraft APU while the aircraft is parked at the gate.

This considerably reduces CO2 emissions and leads to major savings in the fuel budget. At the same time, the noise level is reduced to the benefit of the airport personnel, passengers and to surroundings in general. Another benefit is savings on the costly maintenance to on-board APU, based on hours of operation.
