AXA Power Coil – The power of integration

AXA Power introduces a revolutionary 2-in-1 solution for 400 Hz bridge-mounted Ground Power. Combining a 400 Hz 90 kVA frequency converter and a cable drum in one housing, the unique, fully-patented AXA Power Coil represents a radical improvement in the industry.

A new approach to power

Traditionally, a 400 Hz ground power solution for passenger boarding bridges consists of entirely separate systems or parts. These typically include the GPU, a cable handling system, interconnection cable and aircraft cable. These components are usually sourced from different suppliers and require separate on-side installation and testing.

Now, AXA Power has introduced a solution that saves both time and money by combining all these parts in one ready-tested state-of-the-art unit.

The AXA Power Coil is a space-saver giving end-users more flexibility on the ground. The integrated system means the AXA Power Coil weighs up to 40 per cent less than most ground power systems. And if your power requirements go beyond 90 kVA, just install two AXA Power Coils side by side.

Aesthetic design

Besides the technical advantages of the AXA Power Coil, this new unit also supports the trend for a more aesthetic design of modern airports. Especially when glass passenger boarding bridges are installed. The innovative design of the AXA Power Coil meets present and future demands for functionality and design. 

Compact and lightweight

The AXA Power Coil is already generating a lot of excitement from within the industry. Boarding bridge manufacturer FMT, the first company to invest in the AXA Power Coil, has been quick to praise the unit’s compact and lightweight design.

Spokesman Lars Espen-Nilsson explains: “Having the 400 Hz system in a single unit makes it easier to retrofit additional service points, such as fresh water service. The previous systems were somewhat larger and needed a bigger service area. But the unified system makes installation and start-up a lot simpler and dealing with one supplier is also more cost-effective. It also makes dealing with insurance easier.”

Keeping it simple

End-users are also impressed with the AXA Power Coil’s performance. Jörg Rofkar, Senior Electrician at Hannover Airport, considers his team “lucky” to be one of the first to use the Power Coil.

He adds: “We have worked with AXA Power for over eight years and have found their follow-up service to be excellent. Their engineers are always ready with good tips and guidance if we need it, but we have barely had to call them about the AXA Power Coil.”
When asked what benefits the AXA Power Coil has provided in Hannover, he explains: “Its principal benefit is its simplicity. You just push a button and that’s it. We’re lucky to have it.”
